Let me tell you about...
..one of my most favorite books in the history of ever.

The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan. Someday, when the appropriate technology arrives and society has become more accepting, I'm going to marry it and have babies with it. Because the world needs more excellent books, and also because when you think about it, books make good boyfriends. They don't stink, they provide excellent distraction during boring subjects, and they make drinking coffee more enjoyable! What's not to like?

The Demon’s Lexicon tells the story of sixteen year old Nick who is a busy enough boy, thank you very much. He keeps a constant battle against polysyllabic words; broken cars; and also against murderous magicians and their demons. But when his brother, Alan, becomes marked with a sign of death, Nick must confront the lies that make up his world, cope with the constant presence of the two Crawfords, and haunt the magicians who have always haunted his family.

(I tried very hard on that synopsis, you guys, but it still reads like the one on the back cover with splotches of other reader's better synopses on the internet. I wanted to write something titillating and positively original, but I just CAN'T! :O This is probably because of the fact that The Boards and My Future Career Rumination are dancing tango before my very eyes right now. But just trust me on this: THIS BOOK'S AWESOME.)

I think one of SRB's greatest talent is identifying the most cemented literary conventions, and trampling on them. In this book, heroes are not interested in doing the saving; girly girls are ruthless and efficient; crippled boys show cunning and genuine badass; and the villains are oddly sympathetic. After having my 2586th plot theory dismantled, I thought to myself, “Goodness, this woman is such a troublemaker.” And I do mean troublemaker in the best possible way.

The Demon's Lexicon made me laugh, cry, feel a hundred different emotions, think, and dream. Remember back in high school when we were taught the elements of literature? I distinctly remember that good literature should manifest a "universality of ideas". Of course back then I thought it was just fancily worded bull: I never really understood what it meant. I think I understand it a little better now.

Good books - good writing, in general - have the power to communicate the basic sameness of human beings. As the author presents the
reasons for, the circumstances that shaped a character's personality and actions, the reader will have a moment of thinking, "Gundamn, of course he'll act like callous bastard, who wouldn't be a callous bastard under those circumstances?" When you think about it, underneath all the complexities and differences, people are pretty simple to understand.

The characters in TDL are well-developed and believable, the plot so richly layered it calls for repeated reading, the themes solid enough to make an epic series. It all becomes exponentially more awesome when you consider that we are speaking of a debut novel right here.

Debut authors are often treated with kind understanding. They’re still fumbling, yes, but they are valued for their potentialities.

Well, my friend, you better leave your kindness elsewhere and brace yourself for impact instead. There’s not just potential in The Demon’s Lexicon – there’s major kinetic.

This book makes me jump for joy!

The Demon's Lexicon will come out June the 2nd in the US and the UK, which means to say I have absolutely NO idea when it will reach our lovely Philippine shores. I'm hoping for no atrociously protracted (LOL this word reminds me of thesis days) delays. And also to the customs people who want to push through with the book tax (and are subsequently cutting the chances of debut books ever reaching this country), I wish you an eternity of reading nothing but Precious Hearts Romances.

hi jezzah. i just read your comment in one of my old blog posts. first of all, congrats in advance sa boards! i know papasa kayong lahat, hehe.

you were asking me about online writing jobs, and i guess you found the right person to ask, haha. until now active pa rin ako dito kasi i haven't started on my nursing job yet, though papasok na ako sometime before august. anyway, here are a few links you can try:

Odesk - this is where i get majority of my online writing jobs. it's like an online job database. you have to complete your profile first and take some tests before applying for jobs. it takes time and a lot of patience, pero high-paying yung mga buyers diyan. click the banner below para makapunta ka sa site (at para magka-referral points din ako, hehe):

The On Demand Global Workforce - oDesk

Access Essays - if you like writing term papers and stuff. Minimum pay is 90/page, pero it can go up to 300/page depending kung gaano ka-urgent yung order. i'm not super active in there anymore, though. medyo draining kasi magsulat ng academic stuff, hehe. You can go to their website here: http://www.accessessays.com/ or if the link does not work, you can email your application at accessessays@gmail.com

Essays.ph - pretty organized group, puro Pinoy writers, but very low-paying. imagine, 10 articles for 300 bucks, tsk tsk. pero supportive yung staff, and petiks petiks lang ang work. great for starters at kung bored ka lang talaga, hehe. hindi siya masyadong demanding because you are not forced to get an assignment, though if you get one, you have to finish it in 24 hours. here's the link: http://essays.ph/

soooo... yan na lahat ang pinagkukunan ko ng trabaho, and i was able to finance myself from these jobs. i highly recommend odesk kasi you earn dollars there, pero a lot of people find it difficult to start there. patience lang, girl. if you need any assistance, don't hesitate to ask me. i'm here to help. ;)

Thank you for the advice! My bone-deep mistrust with the internet is preventing me from signing up for online jobs that come up in google searches. I think this is pretty sensible, mind you, since a lot of them look pretty suspicious (there are 'companies' that require payment before you can work for them, wtf).

Got a question though, ano ba ang appropriate hourly rate to ask sa oDesk? I'm kind of really inexperienced here, and the only thing in my resume that looks vaguely helpful is that I was Lit Ed of the Nursing Journal last school year. Grabe ngayon ko nireregret ang di ko pagsali ng Ustetika, huhu. And also, sa oDesk ba are you required to take jobs kagad and meet a quota? And why the many tests? Haha I feel like I have to study! And more importantly, how do you get the salary?

I'm sorry for badgering you with questions! Let's chalk it up to me living under the rock, and being an idiot to the core. D:

sorry for the late reply; ngayon ko lang nabasa, hehe. yup, don't trust those companies requiring upfront payment - you're the one who's supposed to get paid for your work.

anyway, you can start at $4-$5 hourly rate and then just increase it as you become more experienced. besides, each time that you apply for a job, you have to set your hourly rate naman e, so yung default hourly rate mo can be changed depending on the job. i suggest i-follow mo na lang yung average hourly rate nung ibang applicants sa isang job post. :)

yung quota, that's the maximum number of jobs you can apply to. you can below it but not exceed it.

tests are supposed to beautify your profile. para mas maging marketable ka. the odesk readiness test is the most important one, kasi without it you won't be able to apply for jobs. the other tests are not required naman. but then, kung gusto mong mas maging marketable ka, you can take the basic tests, like english sentence structure and editing test.

sa salary naman, you can choose two payment options - payoneer and paypal. pwede ring moneybookers pero it's not advisable kasi maraming horror stories about that. when you get paid for a job, it automatically goes to your odesk earnings which you can withdraw whenever you want to. hindi naman siya mawawala dun kahit ilang months mo pa siya ipunin. para makuha mo pera mo from there, you can either apply for a payoneer card or have a paypal account.

applying for a payoneer card is free. just follow the links sa may odesk para makakuha ka ng payoneer card. ipapadala yun sa bahay niyo, siguro makukuha mo siya in a month kasi international shipping yun. kaso may bayad yung card na $10, pero makakaltas lang yun kapag may earnings ka na sa odesk. for example you withdrew $50 sa odesk to your payoneer card, $40 na lang siya kasi you have to pay for the card. pero one-time fee lang naman to. there are still other charges sa payoneer so i don't use this payment method that much. the first (and only) time na ginamit ko ang payoneer card ko, nakalatasan ako ng 500 pesos. the only advantage that it has over paypal is that in 2 days makukuha mon a pera mo. pay $5 and you get your earnings in 2 hours.

as for paypal, go to paypal.com and sign up for a new account. it's free too. i recommend this one kasi ito ang ginagamit ko since after i realized na ang laki ng charges sa payoneer. in order to sign up for a paypal account, you will need a debit/credit card for verification purposes, and a bank account kung saan didiretso yung money mo. pwede ring sa debit card dumiretso yung money mo, pero may $5 na fee yun. pag sa bank account kasi siya connected, walang fee except for the bank fee, which varies from bank to bank.

what i did with paypal is i used my payoneer debit card to verify it. that activates your paypal account. then i opened a bank account sa bpi, and i connected it to my paypal account. since then, dito ko na kinukuha yung money ko. from odesk, i withdraw my earnings to my paypal account, then from paypal, it usually takes 3 days para malipat siya to bpi. bank fee is 150 pesos only. sa bdo kasi 200 pesos ang bank fee. unionbank has no bank fee pero 10k ang kailangan para mag-open ng account, haha.

people say mas maganda ang payoneer over paypal, pero i don't really see that. maganda ang payoneer kung nagmamadali kang kunin ang money mo, and kung malaki talaga ang makukuha mo kasi at least hindi mo mararamdaman pag kinaltasan ka. nung nag-withdraw kasi ako sa payoneer, mga 20k yung winithdraw ko so hindi ramdam yung 500 na nakaltas. pero kung nasa mga 3k lang yung iwi-withdraw mo, lugi ka pa sa payoneer. i prefer paypal kasi i'm not in a hurry to withdraw my earnings, and also because i love shopping online. connected kasi ang paypal sa ebay, hehe.

i know vague pa yang explanation ko but i hope na-enlighten ka naman kahit slight lang, hehe. nung first time ko rin super nangangapa pa ako pero madali lang talaga siya pag na-try mo na. my advice sayo sa ngayon is:

1. find jobs na sa odesk (after you've taken the odesk readiness test na open notes naman)
2. sign up for a paypal account
3. open a bank account (bpi and bdo work well; mas mataas nga lang fees sa bdo pero pareho silang okay sa paypal)
4. apply for a payoneer card

i'm pretty sure matatagalan bago ka makakuha ng first job mo. siguro mga 2 weeks to 1 month ang lilipas before you land your first job, so apply lang ng apply. by the time that you get your first payment, nakarating na ang payoneer card sa bahay niyo, hehe. at hindi mo pa gugustuhing i-withdraw yun kasi iipunin mo pa yung earnings mo para hindi nakakahinayang sa fees. :) so wag mo munang alalahanin yung payment; apply for jobs muna. :D

hmm, if you have any more questions email me na lang sa maimai.04@gmail.com. bihira na kasi akong mag-LJ e. :) good luck!

p.s. kung mag-o-open ka pala ng account sa bpi, make sure international yung card ha. yung sakin bpi express teller. don't use express cash kasi local lang yun; paypal won't accept it. pwede rin namang bank account ng parents mo ang gamitin mo; it does not necessarily have to be yours. tandaan mo lang kung how much yung pera mo dun. :)
